Honor Among Thieves 2001 |
491 Miles To Go
Andyman may not be here, but he'll always be with us.
In my days with PromoWest Productions and the PromoWest Pavilion (2001-2004), there were no shows more memorable than putting together the "Andyman-A-Thons."
Named for the late program director of Columbus radio station CD 101 (now CD 102.5) Andy "Andyman" Davis, they featured a slew of local bands and proceeds benefited the CD 101 For The Kids Charities.
Building the line-ups meant a trip to Davis' bar - Andyman's Treehouse - for beers with his business partner Quinn Fallon, who also fronted the X-Rated Cowboys, one of my all-time favorite bands from Columbus or anywhere else.
The X-Rated Cowboys combined The Replacements with Tom Petty with Bruce Springsteen with Johnny Cash for three albums of originals that earned critical acclaim locally and nationally.
The Cowboys have long since ridden off into the sunset as a performing group, and more than three years after his death, Andyman still casts a legendary shadow over the Columbus music scene.
If we all had the chance to do it one more time for the Andyman, here's what that show would look like.
It would be a two-stage affair outdoors at PromoWest Pavilion (now The LC, but still "PromoWest" to many of us).
All the ticket sales would benefit the CD 102.5 For The Kids Charities and those attending would have the choice of paying $1.01 or $10.25.
Anyone paying the higher ticket price would receive a free X-Rated Cowboys T-shirt with Bob Hite's picture and the tag line: "Our accordion player can kick your entire band's ass." (This T-shirt really does exist.)
Also, those throwing in an extra $1.01 at the door would score a show poster designed by James Bauman who was the graphics sheriff on all the X-Rated Cowboys CDs.
Of course everyone would pay top dollar to create a sea of black "Bob" T-shirts, frame their posters and provide a donation of $50,000+ for CD 102.5 For The Kids.
Doors would open at 5 p.m. and music would start promptly on 5:15 p.m. with B.A. Baracus kicking off the festivities with a 25-minute set.
At 5:45 p.m., Colin Gawel would come onto the main stage alone with a boom box - a la David Byrne in the Talking Heads movie Stop Making Sense - and open with an acoustic version of Profile.
By the time his set ends 90-minutes later, Gawel has taken the packed house through a career retrospective and rotation of players that includes songs with The Lonely Bones, League Bowlers and, of course, Watershed.
For the closing Black Concert T-Shirt, all of Colin's kids come out for an extended jam, then surprise everyone by returning for an encore as the Dead Schembechlers to play Dead Schembechlers, Buckeye Bop, I Hate Michigan and Bomb Ann Arbor Now.
From there, the evening would go something like this.

Chain smoking keyboards and accordion wiz Bob Hite joined forces with former Sovines front man Bob Ray Starker in Whoa Nellie!.
Since 2009, Ben Lamb has been swinging his stand up bass and shoulder-length locks with cowpunk queen and Bloodshot Records singer/songwriter Lydia Loveless, who he later married.
The last I heard C. Douglas "Dougie" Wells moved to Florida.
