TED NUGENT'S GUITAR DOES ALL THE TALKING ON NEARLY PERFECT DOUBLE LIVE GONZO!

Double Live Gonzo!
1978

503 Miles To Go

Before he became a political Gatling gun, Ted Nugent was Tarzan with a guitar strapped to his back and a supreme hunter of all creatures with two legs or four.

In the late 1970's, he was concert box office gold at the biggest venues and festivals.

When Nugent said his hollow-body Gibson Byrdland was "guaranteed to blow the balls off a charging rhino at 60 paces" and "refuses to play sweet shit," there was little reason to doubt him.

Double Live Gonzo! (1978) is the nearly perfect testament to the Nuge's musical superpowers when they were their mightiest.

Signature songs such as StrangleholdCat Scratch Fever, Great White Buffalo and Stormtroopin' grow even more momentous on these live versions.

Yank Me, Crank Me and Wang Dang Sweet Poontang rise as cartoon conquests.

And, Hibernation - from Nugent's Amboy Dukes days - is an instrumental firestorm that blasts any doubts about why he was mentioned in "greatest guitarists in the world" arguments.

His between songs raps and braggadocio remain hilariously quotable.

Featuring Derek St. Holmes (guitar and vocals), Rob Grange (bass) and the late Cliff Davies (drums), the Double Live Gonzo! backing band is complete with all the players who performed on Nugent's three initial solo albums - Ted Nugent, Free-For-All and Cat Scratch Fever - and made them multi-platinum sellers.

The only thing that keeps Double Live Gonzo! from perfection is the absence of Free-For-All.

If Nugent was as politically committed then as he is now, we never knew. We were too mesmerized by that grand old Gibson.
