CHECKING IN OR CHECKING OUT, EAGLES' HOTEL CALIFORNIA STILL A POLARIZING PLACE

Hotel California

477 Miles To Go

Whether checking in or checking out, nearly 40 years later the Eagles' Hotel California maintains a polarizing place in music history.

Its cultural significance can be debated. Its commercial and radio play impact is undeniable.

Hotel California and its title track went to No.1, as did New Kid In Town. Worldwide, it has sold tens of millions of copies, 16 million in the U.S. alone.

The band's fifth release, it's the first with Joe Walsh and without Bernie Leadon.

That guitar player trade resulted in a sound that's less country, more rock and the third No.1 single on the album - Life In The Fast Lane.

Some view that song and the title track as themes to the "Swingin' Seventies" in Southern California. Others hold a less flattering, more Dude-like opinion.

Recently the conversation has been rekindled by the February 2013 release of The History of the Eagles documentary.

Regardless of where one falls on the Eagles and the Hotel California debates, the film is a fascinating look at the business of rock 'n' roll, the Troubadour scene that gave birth to some of music's biggest acts, and the volatility of the relationships within the various Eagles incarnations.

My biggest wish is that radio could have traded plays from New Kid In Town to any combination of Wasted Time, Victim Of Love, Try And Love Again and The Last Resort
