SPEED WORK ON THE STONES, COURTYARD HOUNDS, THE REPLACEMENTS & DON HENLEY

Exile On Main Street

404 MILES TO GO

Exile On Main Street

I have long argued that Exile On Main Street is the greatest rock 'n' roll album of all time.

From the opening Rocks Off through the closing Soul Survivor, it's 18 songs of intoxicating Rolling Stones blues/rock/soul/country voodoo, played loose and dirty throughout.

Happy isn't the even the best Stones song, but if I only get one to listen to forever, that's it.

In 2010, Exile On Main Street was re-released with a bonus disc of 10 songs that didn't appear on the original. Good Time Women is the precursor to the classic Tumbling Dice, and there are alternate takes on Loving Cup and Soul Survivor, among the previously unreleased material.

It may be impossible to improve on Exile; but what's not to love about more from the same?

Get Your Ya-Ya's Out

Recorded days before Age of Aquarius crashed at Altamont Speedway, Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out captures the Rolling Stones live (mostly at New York's Madison Square Garden) when there was no doubt they lived up the introduction as "the greatest rock 'n' roll band in the world."

Take your choice of aural evidence - Jumpin' Jack Flash, Stray Cat Blues, Love In Vain, Midnight Rambler, Sympathy For The Devil, Live With Me, Honky Tonk Women or Street Fighting Man.

Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out easily ranks among the greatest live records of all time.

Amelita

423 MILES TO GO

Amelita

The Court Yard Hounds sound like Sheryl Crow. Sheryl Crow wants to be a country star. Natalie Maines plays rock 'n' roll covers.

Listening to Amelita, you would never know sisters Martie Maguire and Emily Robison were once a part of the biggest selling female country act in the world

The answer is simple. Crow needs to join the Dixie Chicks and the four of them hit the summer amphitheater and festival circuit playing a mix of Dixie Chicks, Sheryl Crow, Court Yard Hounds and Natalie Maines solo songs.

It would be like a female version of the Eagles with equal amounts of things for fans to love and detractors to hate.

The Replacements Stink

It's completely believable that The Replacements could evolve from this beautiful mess of an EP into Let It Be and Tim.

It's impossible to imagine them ending up at All Shook Down.

There might not be another singer alive with a more natural angst accent than Paul Westerberg.

Actual Miles: Henley's Greatest Hits

Years before Hell froze over, Mojo Nixon screamed, "Don Henley must die. Don't let him get back together with Glenn Frey."

That plan didn't work so well.

The Eagles reunion rolls on and on. Even if Henley flat lined today, we'll be hearing the Eagles and his solo songs on the radio forever.

Several of his solo greatest hits are 1980s dated, but even Mojo and The Dude have to admit some of them are pretty good songs.

I dare anyone to watch 10 minutes of the History Of The Eagles documentary and not watch the whole thing over and over again.
