SPEED WORK ON BRUCE, BOSTON, DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS, PUBLIC ENEMY & SHELBY LYNNE

Wrecking Ball
2012

440 Miles To Go

Every new Bruce Springsteen record faces a daunting question: How does it compare to old Bruce?

When the catalog includes some of the most revered records in rock history, it's always a tough measure to make.

Wrecking Ball is another in the string of solid Springsteen offspring.

But, when your elder brothers are named Born To Run, Darkness On The Edge Of Town, The River and Nebraska, it's tough to push them off the turntable for very long.

Boston
1976

446 Miles To Go

Boston might have been faceless and all the players save for guitarist Tom Scholz nearly nameless, but that doesn't mean they weren't memorable.

(In the world of Ohio trivia, Scholz was born and raised in Toledo, graduating from Ottawa Hills High School in 1965.)

From their 1976 self-titled debut, five of the eight songs still reap regular airplay on classic rock radio - More Than A Feeling, Peace Of Mind, Foreplay Long Time, Rock N Roll Band and Smokin.

Their guitar spaceship logo remains one of the iconic images of the 1970s.

It has been such long time, and I don't think any of them are going away anytime soon.

Decoration Day
2003

449 Miles To Go

Decoration Day is the first of the trio of Drive-By Truckers records that feature Jason Isbell as part of the fleet.

Though Isbell only has two writing credits on Decoration Day, they're the title track and the eternal parental wisdom of Outfit. Both remain signature songs in his solo shows.

It's a mellower than the Truckers' previous rides, but they still grind the guitars plenty on this Patterson Hood-dominated collection with nine of the 15 songs his, which means plenty of drinking, caustic characters and bad behavior.

Power To The People And The Beats:
Public Enemy's Greatest Hits

1998

455 Miles To Go

This listen came while visiting central Florida and being within a few miles of the jury deliberation in the Trayvon Martin/George Zimmerman case as it came to a close.

The overriding racial tones of supporters on both sides of the shooting made it clear how much we still need the Public Enemy news network and how many miles we still need to run as a nation more divided by race than we would like to believe.

The three things that soar the highest from Public Enemy's greatest hits are the musical diversity of the backing tracks, the prophetic poetry of Chuck D., and the power of Flavor Flav as foil and jabbing jester to Chuck D.

Don't believe the reality show hype. Long before the Flavor of Love, Flav always knew what time it really was in the Terrordome.

Given our current times, bring the noise of Chuck D., Public Enemy and Do The Right Thing's Mister SeƱor Love Daddy now more than ever.

"My people, my people, what can I say; say what I can. I saw it but didn't believe it; I didn't believe what I saw. Are we gonna live together? Together are we gonna live?"

Just A Little Lovin'
2008

464 Miles To Go

Shelby Lynne was five albums and nearly 10 years into her recording career when she won Best New Artist at the 2001 Grammy Awards for I Am Shelby Lynne.

I Am Shelby Lynne the album and Shelby Lynne the artist were soaring, sexy and deserving of all their accolades.

Her 2008 Dusty Springfield covers collection Just A Little Lovin' is just as risky and sultry.

Lynne takes on some of Springfield's biggest hits including the title track, Anyone Who Had A Heart, I Only Want To Be With You, The Look Of Love and Breakfast In Bed.

There is no sin in preferring Lynne's takes on Just A Little Lovin' and Breakfast In Bed to the originals. Is there?

Go buy this record and tell 'em Dusty sent you.
